American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors International (ASCLD/LAB)

Mitotyping has been an ASCLD/LAB accredited laboratory since 2001 and is now accredited with the new ASCLD/LAB-International program.

We are also permitted in the area of forensic identity by the New York State Department of Health.

We recover mtDNA from over 95.5% of hairs.

Please see our January 2005 publication in Journal of Forensic Sciences about our five years of casework experience with hair analysis. Our protocols for working with degraded DNA give us a superior recovery rate for mtDNA in challenged samples.

Our Team Of Specialists
Our laboratory director, Dr. Terry Melton, has over twenty years of experience in the handling of human mtDNA, and over fifteen years of forensic mtDNA experience. She completed her doctorate at Penn State University under the direction of Professor Mark Stoneking, a world expert in the study of both human mtDNA variation and ancient DNA. In addition to publishing original research in the Journal of Forensic Sciences and the American Journal of Human Genetics, she has been an invited speaker for the Department of Justice and the First International Conference on Forensic Human Identification in the Millennium, and has presented original research at the American Academy of Forensic Sciences annual meeting, the Promega Symposium on Human Identification, and SWGDAM conferences. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and is currently serving a term on the editorial board of the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

Charity Holland, MPH, forensic examiner and quality manager, has had extensive, focused experience in the handling of human DNA for the last twenty years.  Her previous stints as examiner and technical leader at both The Bode Technology Group and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Lab provided her with unparalleled opportunities to perfect skills on difficult samples.  She is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.

Our forensic technicians are highly trained and experienced in forensic testing, and two technicians have been employed by Mitotyping for twelve years each.

The combined person-years of experience in forensic DNA analysis at Mitotyping Technologies is over 60 years when considering all technicians and examiners.
